Chest Physiotherapy

When most people think of physiotherapy, they imagine help with sore backs, sprained ankles, or post-surgery rehab. But physios also play a critical role in managing respiratory health. Chest physiotherapy, also known as respiratory physiotherapy, helps people breathe more easily by clearing mucus from the lungs, improving airflow, and preventing complications like infections.

Chest physio can benefit people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It’s commonly used to support those with conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, asthma, and cystic fibrosis. It’s also a key part of recovery after chest or abdominal surgery, when deep breathing and coughing can
become difficult. Even people who are temporarily unwell or bedridden can benefit from airway clearance to reduce the risk of lung infections.

Treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. Physiotherapists use a combination of manual techniques like chest percussion and vibrations, as well as breathing exercises to loosen and shift mucus. Physio’s may even use devices such as positive expiratory pressure (PEP) devices to keep airways open, or guide individuals through breathing control techniques like the Active Cycle of Breathing. In some cases, simply positioning the body in a certain way, called postural drainage, can help gravity do the work.

Education is just as important as hands-on therapy. Physios teach people how to clear their airways independently, use their inhalers correctly, and recognise early signs of a flare-up or infection. The goal is always to empower individuals to manage their condition confidently at home.
